Retinopathy of Prematurity (ROP)

Official Medical Brochure — Lumivis Eye Clinic

What is Retinopathy of Prematurity?

ROP is a severe eye condition in premature infants caused by an avascular (bloodless) zone of the retina and abnormal vessel growth (fibrovascular tissue proliferation), which can lead to retinal detachment and permanent visual disability.

Timeline of Retinal Vascular Development

Normally, retinal blood vessels begin developing between 12–16 weeks of gestation and complete their growth by 38–40 weeks.

Pathology Mechanism

Disruption of normal vessel formation leads to tortuosity and abnormal new vessels forming at the demarcation line between vascular and avascular retina. This causes fibrovascular tissue growth toward the anterior segment, traction, and retinal detachment.

Critical Observation Window & Screening

The disease primarily develops between 5–15 weeks after birth (during which the infant must remain under close ophthalmologist supervision). Fundus examination by a pediatric eye doctor is mandatory during this period.

Stages and Risk Factors

ROP progresses through 5 stages. Without timely treatment, it can result in permanent blindness. Screening continues for 4–5 months.

VEGF Factor

The factor driving pathological vessel growth is VEGF (vascular endothelial growth factor), produced by hypoxic retinal tissue.

Risk Factors for ROP Development:

  • Birth weight less than 2,000 g;
  • Gestational age under 35 weeks;
  • Intrauterine growth restriction;
  • Prolonged oxygen therapy;
  • Multiple pregnancy.

Treatment:

The key to preserving vision is timely Anti-VEGF therapy (intravitreal injection to stop neovascularization) at early stages of the disease.

Protect your child's right to see the world with clarity — early screening makes all the difference!
